I learned from one of my readers a very interesting custom on Sao Antonio Day in early June. If a girl or woman wants a boyfriend or husband, she gets a statue of Saint Anthony and sticks it headfirst in water. If it is a small statue, it goes into a glass of water. A large statue goes into a well. The statue is not taken out until the girl has her desired male.
Certainly most people do not believe it works, but it’s a fun myth, kind of like kissing the blarney stone will make you a great speaker. Can you think of some tradition in American culture that I can share with her at our next meeting?
