“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4(NASV)
Upon first examination this seems like quite a deal! Our human spirits imagine such indulgence –a fairy godmother-type God who is at our beck and call.
But look at the beginning of the verse. Just what is it that will produce the desires of my heart? “Delight yourself in the Lord….” How can we do that?
There are a few people in the world that I truly delight in. Those people–whether a best friend, favorite uncle, beloved grandmother, or cherished grandchild–rarely express any disapproval of me. They pamper me with their attentions or stimulate me with their ideas. Being with them is a delight to me, and I’ll go to great lengths both to be with them and to please them.
Thus it is with delighting ourselves in the Lord. As we get to know Him, we delight ourselves in His presence and in what pleases Him. As we spend time with Him in prayer and in His Word, we begin to want what He wants. As I delight myself in the Lord, more and more His desires will become mine, and ultimately He will give me the desires of my heart–and His.
