Let me tell you about the church in Natal, Brazil. I spent six weeks there in 2012 and 2014. In 2016 we did not intend to return, but we went for ten days to help with a camp after the regular Let’s Start Talking team had worked there for six weeks or so.
The two couples who minister to the church there are amazing—Roberto and Marisa Signoretti and Osmildo and Marta Braga. They totally give their lives to the church, to helping it grow in numbers and also spiritually once they are members. They have Bible classes throughout the week; they minister to the homeless who live under the bridge. (They save 2-liter bottles so they can cut them in half to serve soup to the homeless they visit.) They tell them about the love of God and the importance of Jesus and how he saves us.
They open their homes constantly to various groups, both members of the church there and those they are hoping to reach with the gospel. They live modestly in condos similar to a couple’s starter apartment in the US. Their cars are aging but serviceable.
Osmildo has started a transportation service to get children to and from school. They need this because their support from the church in Texas stopped last year. Their congregation of about 80 is not wealthy; they have enough contribution to pay the bills but I’m not sure that any goes to pay their ministers. The church is paid for, and last year they were challenged to raise R15,000 to pay the taxes. That’s about $5000 and it was hard for them to raise, but they did it because many gave sacrificially. It is an excellent facility that includes classrooms, offices, and a third-floor apartment for LST teams.
So now they are managing on $600 a month from supporters in the United States. Our congregation, the Central Church of Christ in Cincinnati, cannot afford to support them financially. We are supporting them in prayer and in words of encouragement and hope that is enough for now.
Prices in Brazil are a bit cheaper than here, but not much. I’m not sure how they are making it, though I know they eat a lot of rice and beans. The prices on both have doubled in the last couple of years. I suspect they are depleting any savings they might have had.
So here’s my plea: if you have been wanting to donate to a foreign mission as part of your own going “into all the world to preach the gospel,” here’s your chance. I can vouch for Osmildo and Marta and for Roberto and Marisa. They love God, His church, His people, His Word, and each other. They live for Jesus every day and are passionate about Him. They are not in Brazil temporarily—they are Brazilians. But they need help financially to keep working there full-time.
So if you’d like to send a one-time donation or a monthly one, write the check to Central Church of Christ and send it to:
